A century-old story, born in Savoie
The origins of the Monceny family go back to the Middle Ages. Our name evokes the Mont-Cenis pass in the Maurienne region. The family seems to have settled in Burgundy in the 17th century, like many Savoyards fleeing the Wars of Religion.
The first written traces of our lineage can be found in Beaune, initially as textile merchants. The de Montceny family soon branched out into the world of wine, first as brokers. In the last century, this was the name given to the profession of country broker, who put winegrowers and merchants in touch with each other for grape or must transactions.
From broker to négociant-éléveur in Burgundy
The legacy of the Montceny family continues in the aftermath of the First World War with Philippe, whose profession and privileged role at the crossroads of vine and wine forge strong links with winemakers on the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. His son Bertrand de Montceny joined the family business in 1955, supplementing his activity as a broker ("courtier") with that of a négociant éleveur, with cellars and a bottling facility in Beaune. An astute businessman and connoisseur, Bertrand quickly built up a strong local, then national and international clientele, notably in Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.
With no descendants, in the early 1990s he sold his house to a well-known Beaune wine merchant, who has carried on the family spirit ever since.
